Intrinsically Safe Radios
Radios certified for use where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. An intrinsically safe set is built so it cannot release enough electrical or thermal energy to ignite the atmosphere around it — which is why ordinary radios are barred from these areas entirely.
Icom — Intrinsically Safe
The UL-certified member of the IC-F52D family, carrying the same IDAS digital capability as the standard radio while approved for Class I Division 1 areas.
Intrinsically Safe IDAS Digital Portable
The UL-certified intrinsically safe version of the IC-F52D, approved for Class I Division 1 hazardous locations — refineries, fuel terminals, gas plants and grain handling, where an ordinary radio is not permitted. Full 5 W output is retained under the approval.

Getting the Certification Right
Intrinsic safety depends on the complete assembly, not the radio alone. Three points decide whether an installation is compliant.
The battery is part of the approval
The IC-F52D-UL is intrinsically safe only with the BP-292UL pack fitted. A standard battery in the same radio voids the certification completely.
Never charge inside the hazardous area
The BC-226 and BC-227 chargers are not certified for explosive atmospheres. Charging must happen in a safe area, away from the classified zone.
Match the zone to the approval
Class I Division 1 covers flammable gas present in normal operation; Class II covers combustible dust and Class III fibres. Tell us your area classification and we will confirm the right model.
